UK Gambling Commission recently published its latest report that showed a 10-percent increase in mobile gambling within the UK. The report also indicated a positive increase in the number of UK bettors.

The new UKGC report showed that the UK market is a lucrative one for any licensed operators. With the increasing value and popularity of cryptocurrency, many bettors are looking to make wagers with Bitcoin. There are some operators that are already addressing this by adding the cryptocurrency as part of the website’s payment options.

Increase in UK bettors

Year 2016 saw about 43 percent of its participants going to gambling sites via smartphones and tablets. This is a 10-percent increase from the figures reported by UKGC in 2015. This shows the high demand for and the importance of mobile-friendly casinos and betting sites.

According to the report, about 48 percent of the participants placed bets in the last four weeks of 2016. This is about three percent higher than the figures recorded during the same period in 2015. It is important to note that about 15 percent of the figure was players of the National Lottery.

The report also indicated that 17 percent of the locals choose to gamble online. This is the same figure as the one from 2015. Moreover, about 97 percent of the people who gamble online do so in their own home.

Another interesting statistics raised in the new UKGC report is how 68 percent of young adults aged 18 to 24 became interested in making wagers because of social media advertisements. This figure shows a great potential for social media marketers.

James Green, program director at UKGC, said:

“This report paints an important picture of how consumers in Britain choose to gamble – identifying emerging trends and potential risks to the public. We are also now able to provide a more detailed snapshot of online behaviors, which featured for the first time last year. Effective protections come from strong evidence. Our research puts us in a powerful position to better understand the needs of gambling consumers.”

With the help of the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) to check on any unfair terms and conditions, UKGC noted in the report these three major concerns among UK bettors:

  • Having to wager a certain amount before you can claim prizes or winnings
  • Unfair limits on the availability of or qualifying for a free bet
  • It being too difficult to win or in the companies favour

Addressing the concerns and tapping into the market

There are operators that are familiar with the common concerns among many punters. Some are already addressing this problem such as NetBet . NetBet is a UKGC-licensed online gambling site that offers casino games, sports bets, and poker tournaments. It provides player-friendly services and policies to give the UK gambling community a fair and healthy online gambling space.

A good way for gambling operators to open the doors to the growing online and mobile players in the UK is to accept Bitcoin, especially after UKGC recognized Bitcoin last year. The digital currency provides many benefits to any players such as a fast transaction time and no transaction fees. TonyBet and NetBet are on the way to tapping into the UK market by adding Bitcoin payment in its gambling site and become the first two Bitcoin gambling sites in the UK.
